The Austrian Mint has been issuing unique bimetallic coins made of silver and niobium with the Niobium Silver series since 2003 . The niobium core, which changes color every year, is made possible by a method developed by the Plansee Technology Center in Tyrol. The niobium is colored by anodic oxidation and creates a specific color effect depending on the thickness of the oxide layer. The silver-niobium bimetallic coins consist of a ring with 10 g of silver (90% silver and 10% copper) and, until 2006, a core of 7.15 g of niobium. Since 2007, the core has only weighed 6.5 g. The diameter of the niobium coins is 34 mm. The circulation was increased to 65,000 pieces from 2005 due to the great interest from collectors.
