Series: 10 Euro Germany Silver, from 2015

In April 2015, the federal government decided to stop minting 10-euro commemorative coins made of a copper-nickel alloy and to replace them with 20-euro silver coins from 2016. These editions weigh 18 grams, are made from an alloy of 925 thousand parts silver (16.65 g) and 75 thousand parts copper (sterling silver) and have a diameter of 32.5 mm. They therefore have the same dimensions and the same silver content as the 10 euro commemorative coins until 2010, but are now issued at a face value of 20 euros. This means that the 20 euro commemorative coin – like the 10 euro coin – again corresponds to the silver content of the club thaler in the 19th century.

The silver commemorative coins from 2011 to 2015 were apparently unpopular with collectors and other interested parties because the silver content was lower and they could not be purchased at the stated face value, but only at a premium. On the other hand, the 20 euro coins in the simpler uncirculated finish are again available without a surcharge. The Ministry of Finance hopes this will “stimulate the collectors market”. The material value, which was around eight euros in June 2017, meant there was sufficient reserve at the time of the change. A development like 2010/2011, when the material value exceeded the nominal value of 10 euros due to the high price of silver at the time, was not to be expected so quickly at the nominal value of 20 euros. However, the price of silver rose significantly again in the summer of 2020, so that the material value of the 20 euro coin rose to 12 to 13 euros in August 2020.

In 2017, the 20-euro series was continued with the motifs “Grimm's Fairy Tales: The Bremen Town Musicians”, “500 Years of the Reformation”, “50 Years of German Sports Aid”, “200 Years of the Invention of the Bicycle” and “300. Birthday of Johann Joachim Winckelmann”.
