ORION, Australia Southern Sky series, 1oz Silver Proof Domed Colored, $5, 2014
The Royal Australian Mint's Southern Sky series celebrates the most famous constellations in the sky.
The 2014 Orion coin is the last in the series and celebrates the Orion constellation, named after a character from Greek mythology. Each of the 2014 Australian Silver Orion Domed Coins contains 1 troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver and has a face value of A$5. The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In his depiction of the Queen, she is wearing her royal tiara and is shot in profile. To the left of her is engraved the name of the Queen “Elizabeth II” and to the right the country name “Australia”. Below the Queen's profile is the coin's face value and its year of minting, displayed as "2014" and "5 Dollars." The reverse of the coin features the Orion constellation in full color at its center. The words “Southern Sky” are engraved on the top left of the coin and the name of the constellation “Orion” is engraved on the bottom right. Unlike many other coins that have a flat surface, these coins are dome shaped. This unique design is complemented by multiple colors on the reverse of the coin, making it a unique silver investment.
