A quokka is a small species of wallaby found primarily in southwestern Western Australia, particularly on Rottnest Island, an idyllic spot 18 kilometers off the coast near Perth. About the same size, the quokka has thick, gray-brown fur, a broad face, shiny black eyes and round, furry ears. Thanks to its cute, smiling appearance and people's acceptance of it, the quokka has become a popular subject for "selfies" in the age of social media. Each coin is minted by the Perth Mint from 1 ounce of 99.99% pure silver and issued as legal tender in accordance with the Australian Currency Act 1965. The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 Quokka 2021 Proof-quality 1-ounce colored silver coins. DESIGN The reverse of the coin shows a colored quokka on the beach with a lighthouse in the background. Standing on its hind legs, the herbivorous marsupial eats its preferred food from leaves. The design includes the inscription QUOKKA and the Perth Mint mintmark “P”. The obverse of the coin features the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the weight and fineness, monetary value and the year 2021.
