Series: Climate Zones of the Earth

Edition: Temperate Zone, 2019

In 2016, a commemorative coin with a face value of five euros was issued for the first time in Germany. The coin is entitled “Planet Earth” and is made up of three components: an outer ring, the inner core and an intermediate blue polymer ring that is partially translucent and was developed at the Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials at RWTH Aachen University. The outer ring as well as the inner core are made of different copper-nickel alloys. The mass is 9.0 grams. The design comes from Stefan Klein. This novelty is produced in all five German mints, each with a slightly different shade of blue. The total mintage is 2,250,000 coins, of which 250,000 are in mirror finish. The issue date was April 14, 2016. In November 2016, due to the high demand for the new type of coin, the federal government decided to issue a five-part series of 5-euro commemorative coins from 2017 to 2021 with the theme “Earth's climate zones”. The start of this series was the “Tropical Zone” coin issued on April 27, 2017. The coins in this series have the same diameter and mass as the 5 euro “Planet Earth” commemorative coin; They only differ in their motif and the color of the polymer ring, which is intended to create an association with the respective climate zone. Each of the five mints uses its own color.
